City Hall carbon garden after

This project transformed traditional turf grass into a "carbon garden." The garden showcases native California grasses that improve carbon storage in the soil. Additional native and low water-use plant species were included to add color and variety to the garden.

In addition to the carbon storage benefits, the native plants in the carbon garden will reduce water consumption, decrease reliance on fertilizers, reduce maintenance costs, provide habitat for pollinators, and create a cooler and more comfortable urban environment.

The carbon garden represents a forward-thinking approach to urban landscaping, leveraging the benefits of native plants to combat climate change, conserve resources, and enhance the overall quality of life for residents in Livermore.

The carbon garden is part of an ongoing partnership between the City of Livermore (City) and Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) to collaborate on local climate solutions.
