In the event of a disaster you may not have access to a medical facility for treatment or medication.

Make a Plan:

Create a Contact List with those that can help you in a disaster:

  • This will be your support networkContact List
  • Keep this list in a secure and protected location such as your Emergency Kit
  • Inform this group of where your emergency supplies are located
  • Consider giving one of your support members a key to your home
  • Keep a list of the nearest medical facilities, medical hospitals and accessible transportation
  • If you are a non-English speaker please:
    • Ask someone you know who speaks English to help you understand this information
    • See the Spanish side of the Emergency Preparedness Guide for more information

Plan for an accessible transportation in the event of an evacuation:

If you are on dialysis or other life support know:

  • The location of your medical facilities
  • The availability of more than one other facility around you
  • Nearest Medical Hospital, Medical Facility, Pharmacy, and Drug store to you

If your medical equipment requires electricity to operate:

  • Speak with your doctor/health care provider for ways to keep it running in the event of a power outage
  • Ask your health provider to place you on a list for priority restoration
  • Plan ways to evacuate with your medical equipment
  • Plan how your will replace your equipment if lost or damaged

If you are on medications:

  • Organize and protect your prescriptions, vitamins, and over-the counter drugs in preparation for an emergency or disaster
  • Keep a list of your medications and put them in a safe and protected location like your Emergency Kit

If your disability inhibits your ability to communicate:Braille

  • Carry printed cards or storing information on your devices to inform First Responders and others how to communicate with you

Keep in mind the services you or your service animal or pets may need:

  • Food
  • Water
  • Other supplies
  • If you need to evacuate learn if your shelter allows pets or not
    • Some shelters will only allow service animals

Wear medical alert tags & bracelets to let First Responders know you have access and functions needs.
