Sister Cities
"The Sister Cities program is an important resource to the negotiations of governments in letting people themselves give expression of their common desire for friendship, good will and cooperation for a better world for all." President Dwight D. Eisenhower (circa 1956)
In the years following the initiation of the sister city program, whereby people to people international relationships are established to promote world peace, the City of Livermore has formalized three Sister City relationships with the following cities:
Quetzeltenango, Guatemala
Quetzaltenango Guatemala was the first Livermore Sister City. The relationship began in May, 1965. Quetzeltenango is located 125 miles from Guatemala City near a volcano called Santa Maria. It is an important regional center for industry, commerce and education, and is home to five of the six universities in Guatemala.
Yotsukaido, Japan
Yotsukaido Japan became our Sister City in April 19, 1977. Similar to Livermore, Yotsukaido has an agricultural past. Today, Yotsukaido is a commuter town serving the city of Chiba and metropolitan Tokyo. The Yotsukaido Sister City Committee has been very active with many exchanges over the years. For further information in regard to the Livermore Yostukaido Sister City Organization, please visit their website at LYSCO.
Snezhinsk, Russia
In 1998, Livermore adopted its newest Sister City, Snezhinsk, Russia. Situated more than 1200 miles from Moscow in the Ural Mountains, the city of Snezhinsk is home to a major nuclear research laboratory. In the late 1990’s scientists from Livermore worked with their counterparts in the Snezhinsk community to keep nuclear information and material safe during the transition that followed the end of the Cold War.
Sister City Park in Livermore
In 1999, the Sister City Park was dedicated in Livermore. The park is adjacent to the municipal airport, and the flags of our sister cities are flown with the Livermore flag. In addition there are benches and trees, native to the regions of our sister cities, planted in the park.
