Here in Livermore, we are susceptible to two types of floods: floods and flash floods. Floods can take several hours to a few days to develop. If a flood occurs, you will be asked to do one of two things:

EVACUATE: meaning you will leave your home or place of work or

SHELTER IN PLACE: meaning you will remain inside your home. If asked to shelter in place you must bring everyone inside, close and lock all doors, and seal all windows. You must shut off all A/C and heating systems, close your fireplace dampers, and take your disaster supplies to a secure location.

When a flood watch is issued you must:

  • Move all valuables to the upper floor of home or raise everything as high as possible.
  • If you have the time, fill up your gas tank in case of an evacuation.

  • Do not drive, walk, or swim through flood water.
  • Turn around and do not drown!

When a flash flood warning is issued you must: move high

  • Evacuate immediately if flooding has begun.
  • Move to higher ground immediately that is far away from any bodies of water.
  • Do not try driving around barriers that are set up.
  • If your car stalls, you must abandon it and move to higher ground as fast as possible.

In either a flash flood or a flood – if you are told to evacuate, do not hesitate to do so. Evacuate as soon as possible and listen to all instructions given by public safety officials.
