Earthquakes in Livermore
In Livermore, it is very likely that an earthquake will occur. Therefore, it is very important to prepare if one does occur.
Visit MyShake App to sign up for alerts about earthquakes. This is an opt-in system. Visit PG&E to sign up for alerts about outages, notices, and service information by phone, text, and/or email. This is also an opt-in system.
Genasys Protect is an evacuation management tool used by first responders. Residents are encouraged to Know Your Zone by visiting the community-facing Genasys Protect site to find the zone you live in. First responders will reference your zone in emergency alerts, like AC Alert.
Please read the information below to learn what you can do before, during and after to better ensure your safety during such an emergency.
Before Earthquake:
- Designate a safe place in each room.
- Practice Drop, Cover, and Hold:
- Drop to the ground
- Cover yourself by getting under something sturdy
- Hold on
During Earthquake:
- Stay calm and DO NOT panic.
- If Indoors:
- Drop
- Cover
- Hold on
- If Outside:
- Stay outside, find an open area without trees, buildings, or poles.
- Do not go near buildings.
- If Inside a vehicle:
- Slow down, pull over, and stop in an open area.
- Stay in your vehicle and turn on your hazard lights.
After Earthquake:
- Assess everyone for injuries.
- Use emergency kit if needed.
- Leave building immediately once shaking has stopped.
- Do not go back into a building unless authorities say it is safe.
- Check water, gas, and electric lines for damage.
- Shut off all valves.
- If you smell gas turn it off and report it to the authorities.
- Stay away from:
- Chimneys
- Damaged areas
- Debris
- Broken glass
- Turn on radio and listen for further information.
