Stop Junk Mail
Junk mail consumption involves significant natural resources, with 17 trees needed to produce a ton of paper. Each year, over 100 million trees are used for junk mail in the U.S. Additionally, producing and disposing of junk mail consumes 36 million BTUs per ton of paper, using more energy than 2.8 million cars (according to calculations by the New American Dream using U.S. Department of Energy and Paper Task Force data).
To significantly reduce junk mail, limit the exposure of your personal information by avoiding activities that can increase it, such as entering sweepstakes, completing warranty cards, donating to charities, registering for events, or ordering from catalogs. Preventive measures can also include requesting that companies do not sell your information when signing up for services, opting for reduced frequency of catalogs if desired, and marking checks with "DO NOT SELL MY NAME."
For other types of junk mail, such as computer disks, junk faxes, and spam emails, use specific contact points and reporting services like the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) and the Federal Trade Commission (FTC). To manage telemarketing calls, register with the National Do Not Call Registry and file complaints with the FCC if calls persist.
