The City does not provide contractor recommendations. You can find a list of known contractors who provide sidewalk repair services in the City in the sidewalk repair pamphlet.

I see that there is red paint in front of my house. Do I need to do anything right now?
Please wait until you receive notice in the mail as we are determining who is responsible for repairing the sidewalk. The California Streets and Highways Code places the responsibility for repair of the sidewalk on the adjacent property owner.
If a utility box, or the sidewalk surrounding it, is damaged am I responsible to fix it?
The utility companies are responsible for replacing damaged utility boxes and replacing the entire sidewalk panel enclosing the utility box within the sidewalk.
If the curb and gutter is damaged, who is responsible for fixing them?
The City is responsible for the curb and gutter unless the City finds the damage has been caused by the property owner.
What do I need in order to repair my sidewalk?
You will need an encroachment permit and you can find more information on obtaining one here. The City waives the permit and inspection fees for sidewalk repair work.
What is the timeline for the sidewalk program?
The City has an annual sidewalk program and budget. City responsible sidewalk locations are prioritized and programmed for repairs as the annual budget allows. Sidewalk repairs are typically done in dry weather. In spring 2023, the City repaired approximately 25 miles of sidewalk through the city. Over 37 miles of sidewalk that the city is responsible to repair has been mapped out and work is scheduled to be completed this year.
The City will be sending out notices to property owners to repair sidewalks adjacent to their properties.

Who is responsible for sidewalk repairs?
The California Streets and Highways Code places the responsibility for repair of the sidewalk on the adjacent property owner. The City is responsible for ADA ramps and city-owned parks and property. For more information on repair responsibility for single family residences, please see this exhibit.
Who is responsible for the tree damaging my sidewalk?
The property owner is responsible for the tree that is damaging the sidewalk. If a tree needs to be removed or is damaging the sidewalk, a street tree action permit must be submitted and approved. This permit can be obtained at no charge from the Maintenance Division and may be expedited if needed.
Why am I receiving a sidewalk repair notice?
It was determined that the sidewalk adjacent to your home has a lift greater than 0.5 inches, is in an area with high pedestrian traffic (near a school, park, commercial center, etc.), or was reported as a tripping hazard.
Why is there red paint on the sidewalk?
The City is marking sidewalks with red paint at City responsible facilities, high pedestrian areas to increase visibility of sidewalk displacements, and areas that were reported as a tripping hazard. These are sidewalks that will be repaired and/or replaced.
