CALTRANS I-680 PAVING PROJECT
The work is part of a major improvement project that will repave I-680 between Koopman Road in Sunol and Alcosta Boulevard in San Ramon and replace entire sections of the roadway to enhance safety and provide a smoother ride to motorists. Caltrans will need to close freeway lanes and entire sections of the freeway to do the work. The work is scheduled to begin in December 2022, starting in the Sunol area and working northward, and will last about a year and a half. To minimize impact to traffic the road closure will be implemented in phases and the work will be performed at nighttime (between 10 p.m. to 5 a.m.).
Current Phase: Caltrans has scheduled closure of northbound Interstate I-680 from State Route 84 to the Sunol Boulevard in Sunol between 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. beginning December 12, 2022 to April 2023, Monday through Friday. Regular weekend closures are not anticipated, barring unforeseen circumstances, except for full weekend closures on Martin Luther King holiday, President’s Day, Memorial Day, and possibly Labor Day are anticipated.
During the current phase of the project, the suggested detour for I-580 eastbound traffic is to take eastbound SR-84 to I-580.
More information on project status and detours for I-680 traffic could be found on the project website: https://dot.ca.gov/caltrans-near-me/district-4/d4-projects/d4-680-paving-project.
